In many ways brewing beer at home is a lot like playing chess, once you learn a few basic rules you can quickly get in the game. However, also like chess, once you crack the surface you can see just how deep and complex brewing can be as your confidence and skill level increases.
Here at the HBG we want to lay out how beer can be brewed at home to help encourage others who have always wanted to brew or would like to get a little deeper into the hobby. While the methods and procedures we use are not only ways to get things done, they have worked well for us time and again. We hope this tutorial on how to brew beer will be both informative and practical for others interested in homebrew.
Cleaning and Sanitation – Keeping all tools and equipment clean and sanitized is the easiest way to insure good beer every time.
Preparing the Wort – Combining water and various ingredients is the next step towards making delicious beer. Wort can be made in several different ways. Click here to learn more.
Boiling the Wort – Boiling the wort helps to meld the ingredients, pasteurizes the brew and helps release the flavor and aroma of hops. Click here to learn more.
Cooling the Wort – Bringing down the temperature of the boiled wort quickly helps avoid unnecessary exposure to microorganisms and makes it safe to add yeast. Click here to learn more.
Pitching the Yeast – Adding yeast to the cooled wort begins the fermentation process. Click here to learn more.
Primary Fermentation – The initial phase where the yeast converts the sugar in the brew into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Click here to learn more.
Secondary Fermentation/Ageing – An additional phase that allows the flavors of the beer to mature and helps in clearing unwanted sediment out of the finished product. Click here to learn more.
